A yeast infection can be a very annoying and somewhat embarrassing problem. The good news is that there are a number of home remedies for yeast infections that you can try out. Here are some of the things that all women should know about treating yeast infections with home remedies.

Vaginal Yeast Infections

Before trying to treat vaginal yeast infections at home, it’s important to be aware of the most common symptoms. Cottage cheese-like vaginal discharge is one of the symptoms of a yeast infection which is the easiest to recognize. Skin irritation and redness, burning during urination or sexual intercourse, and itching are all some of the other common symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection.

Male Yeast Infections

Many men do not realize that they can also get a yeast infection, but the truth is that they can. When a man has a yeast infection, he will experience penile discharge, itching, and skin irritation. It is uncommon for men to get yeast infections, but it often occurs when a man has sexual intercourse with a woman who has a yeast infection. The good news is that the same home remedies for vaginal yeast infections can also be used for men.

Home Remedies to Treat Yeast Infections

There are many home remedies which are believed to be effective at treating vaginal yeast infections. Here are some of the different home remedies that you may want to take into consideration if you are trying to get rid of a vaginal yeast infection.

Yogurt is one of the yeast infection home remedies that is most recommended by gynecologists. The reason is because the bacteria which is found in yogurt is known to ward off yeast. To benefit the most from yogurt as a yeast infection home remedy, place a dab of plain (vanilla) yogurt with live and active cultures on a tampon. Insert it into the vagina. Keep in mind that yogurt can make a mess, so you may also want to consider wearing a sanitary napkin.

It is also believed that you can benefit some from eating yogurt while you have a yeast infection. Note that it may not take care of the yeast infection as quickly, however. To prevent a yeast infection from reoccurring, eat yogurt with live and active cultures on a daily basis.

Garlic cloves are also believed to get rid of yeast. Insert a garlic clove, the same way that you would insert a tampon, into the vagina. Some women also find that applying garlic paste to a tampon and inserting it into the vagina will also help take care of the yeast infection.

Gentian violet is another at-home remedy for treating yeast infections that is believed to be very effective. All that you need to do is apply it to the area of skin affected by the yeast infection. Wearing a sanitary napkin after you apply gentian violet is a must.

Unsweetened cranberry juice is another home remedy to try out. Since cranberry juice can treat Urinary Tract Infections (UTI’s) by warding off bacteria, there are some people who believe that it can also get rid of yeast. It’s worth a try.

It is important to keep in mind that what may seem like a yeast infection may not always be one. If you do not see any relief from these home remedies for yeast infections within a few days, the best thing that you can do is visit the gynecologist. You may have a sexually transmitted disease (STD), or another type of vaginal infection which is causing symptoms which are similar to that of a yeast infection. Since men are even less common to get yeast infections than women, it is especially important for them to get STD tested when experiencing any unusual symptoms.
